Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
When is wisdom teeth extraction necessary? It becomes necessary if a person`s jaw does not have enough space for all their teeth. Wisdom teeth can then become trapped under the gum, grow in awkward angles, damage other teeth, or partially come through the gum. All these instances can cause discomfort and sometimes infection.
A course of antibiotics will be prescribed if an infection is discovered. The prescription may be required to be finished prior to the procedure. If a patient has been informed that a general anesthetic will be used for the procedure, and then they must refrain from eating or drinking at starting at midnight the night before.
Is the wisdom teeth extraction painful? The only discomfort felt will be when the local anesthetic is administered by injection. If a topical anesthetic is applied prior to injection, there will be little sensation felt. Once the anesthetic has sufficiently numbed the area, the gum tissue is opened. Any bone or connective tissue is separated from the tooth, and then it is extracted. Stitches may or may not be required.
A folded piece of gauze is placed over the wound, and more gauze is provided for the patient to take home. Post wisdom teeth extraction instructions will be provided as well. These will inform the patient when and what kind of pain medication to take. When and what they are able to eat or drink.
The gauze should be changed as needed. But avoid touching the open area. Generally the person must remain in an upright position till the bleeding stops. Soft and liquid foods are suggested. No straws or smoking are allowed, as this will hinder the clotting process. Ice can be applied during the first 24 hours, with moist heat applied after that for 2-3 days if needed.
Adverse wisdom teeth extraction symptoms to watch for are bleeding that does not stop, extreme swelling, a rise in temperature, or if experiencing extreme pain that persists. In this instance the dentist should be notified. Stitches may dissolve or may need to be removed at a later date.
